Hemp-based Packaging
What Is Hemp-Based Packaging?
Hemp-based packaging is created from the fibers and hurd (inner core) of the industrial hemp plant, a fast-growing, low-impact crop known for its incredible strength and renewability. Hemp can be transformed into paper, plastic alternatives, textiles, and molded fiber packaging, offering a biodegradable and recyclable option for brands ready to break up with petroleum-based materials.
How Is It Made?
The hemp plant is harvested and separated into two parts: the long outer bast fibers and the woody inner hurd. Depending on the product type, either or both can be processed, bast fibers for paper and molded fiber packaging, and hurd for bioplastics. The raw hemp is pulped, pressed, or polymerized, depending on the application, and then formed into packaging like containers, boxes, or film wraps.
Since hemp grows quickly, requires no pesticides, and regenerates soil, it makes for a high-yield, sustainable packaging base.
Why Does It Matter?
Hemp packaging doesn’t just reduce waste, it improves ecosystems. It helps prevent deforestation, cleans the air by absorbing large amounts of CO₂, and even restores soil health by pulling toxins from the ground. Plus, it’s durable, compostable, and recyclable, making it an ideal swap for plastic or traditional paper.
For brands that want a high-performance material with an unmistakable sustainability edge, hemp is the ultimate conversation starter.
Best Use Case:
Premium product boxes, cannabis packaging, rigid trays, molded inserts, or paper-based alternatives for brands in wellness, cosmetics, and eco-retail.
Eco-Benefits:
Grows quickly with minimal water and no pesticides
Absorbs more CO₂ per acre than most trees
Fully compostable or recyclable (depending on form)
Improves soil health and can be grown nearly anywhere
Printing Capabilities:
Excellent. Hemp paper and molded packaging can be screen printed, digitally printed, or embossed, especially when processed into smooth, paper-like textures.
