Compostable Mailers Packaging
What Are Compostable Mailers?
Compostable mailers are plastic-free shipping envelopes made from plant-based materials like cornstarch, PLA (polylactic acid), PBAT (a compostable polymer), or kraft paper. They look and function like traditional mailers, flexible, waterproof, and tear-resistant, but are designed to break down naturally in compost rather than sit in landfills for centuries.
They’re a go-to packaging solution for brands that ship frequently and want to reduce their environmental footprint.
How Are They Made?
Depending on the type, compostable mailers are made by processing plant starches and biodegradable polymers (like PLA and PBAT) into thin, flexible film. For paper-based versions, recycled or FSC-certified kraft paper is formed into envelopes with compostable adhesives and inks. These materials are either home compostable or industrially compostable, depending on the formulation.
Some compostable mailers even come with double adhesive strips to encourage reuse before disposal.
Why Does It Matter?
Traditional poly mailers are made from petroleum-based plastic and rarely get recycled—most end up in landfills or oceans. Compostable mailers break this cycle by biodegrading into non-toxic biomass, water, and CO₂ within a few months under composting conditions. They're also lighter than boxes, reducing shipping emissions and material use.
For eco-minded e-commerce brands, compostable mailers send a clear message: we care beyond the product, we care how it’s delivered, too.
Best Use Case:
E-commerce shipping for apparel, accessories, books, skincare, or lightweight goods, especially for sustainable or direct-to-consumer brands.
Eco-Benefits:
Made from renewable, plant-based materials
Breaks down in home or industrial compost in 3–6 months
Leaves no microplastics or toxic residue
Lower carbon footprint compared to plastic mailers
Printing Capabilities:
Great. Compostable mailers can be screen printed or digitally printed with non-toxic, compost-safe inks, perfect for custom branding and messaging that aligns with sustainability values.
